The East European Plain is also known as the Russian plain or the Vostochno-Yevropeyskaya Ravnina or the Russian Russkaya Ravnina. The Russian plain spreads over 1,500,000 square miles and has an average height of 560 feet. The plain stretches from the western border of Russia to the Ural mountains covering almost 1000 miles. It also extends for over 1500 miles from the Arctic Ocean to the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus Mountains.
There are several divisions of the Russian plain namely the Central Russian Uplands, the Dnieper River, Valday Hills, Volga Uplands, Caspian Sea lowlands and the Black Sea. Of the great lowlands areas in the world, this uninterrupted plain is the largest. Almost half of the East European Plain lies at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level. The highest point of the plain, located in the Valday Hills is 1,125 feet. The Russian plain is narrower in the western Europe, but gradually proceeding towards the eastern stretch, it is comparatively broad.
The East European Plain also stretches to the Caucasus mountains passing through the Azov-Caspian Isthmus lying in the north Caucasus. The Stavropol Upland which lies at a height of 300 meters to 600 meters divides the large plains of Kuban and Kuma in the North Caucasus.
