Russian Flora and Fauna



Russian flora and fauna is varied and rich due to its geographic location. The country can be divided into various zones based on its soil and vegetation. A study of Russian Federation land and people can be an interesting one.

In the northern part of Russia is the Arctic desert zone. This zone includes the coastal area of Taymyr Peninsula and many islands of Arctic Ocean. Proper growth of vegetation is not found here. Lichens and mosses mainly grow in this areas. One will get to see sea animals like seal, seas calf and walrus in this zone.

Russian flora and fauna has different characteristic in the Tundra region in Russia. The soil of this region is acidic in nature and does not support any rich vegetation. The main vegetation growth of this area is lichen, willows, birches and mosses. Shrubby growth is also found here. Among the fauna, one will find reindeer, arctic fox and white hare.

Taiga is one of the most important vegetation zone in Russia. It has stretches of thick forest cover. The main trees of this region are of deciduous type. Other trees are spruce and birches. In the southern part, cedar, pine and fir are found. Animals like Russian beer, sable, lynx, reindeer and squirrel are found here. Woodpecker, hazel-grouse and owl are the commonly seen birds here.

The Steppe zone in Russia has vegetation like birch, oak and aspen. Rodents, eagles, skylark, crane and great bustard frequent this area. Xerophytic shrubs are found in the semi desert zone in Russia.
