Russian lacquer boxes are also a popular form of Russian art and craft. This art form was prevalent in China and Japan, which was further borrowed by the European countries. History shows that lacquer boxes were present in France, Switzerland and England.
Russian lacquer boxes are decorated with miniatures and was covered with lacquer. This beautiful art form was unknown to the Russians. The art form was introduced in Russia in 1795 by a Russian merchant and with the times it became one of the popular Russian craft. German artists ere brought to teach the Russians to master this wonderful art form. In Danilkovo the first lacquer box factory was established along with a school, where children were also trained to master it.
Besides lacquer boxes, the Russian factories also started producing items like walking sticks, military caps for the Russian army in order to earn more profits. After learning the art, craftsmen started manufacturing their own products and slowly made their own mark in the Russian market. The Russian Tsars appreciated the art form and allowed the Russian emblem to be on the lacquer boxes when they were displayed at international festivals.
Russian lacquer boxes though were borrowed from the Europeans, but is very much a part of the Russian craft.
