The 1991 Rugby World Cup was hosted by England and few other nations like Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France maintaining a well-organized schedule .
As in the first 1987 Rugby World Cup, sixteen teams participated in the event. Most of the matches were interesting and finally Australia won the World Cup defeating France in the final match. The Rugby carnival spanned for a month from 3 rd October to 2 nd November, 1991. Total 32 matches were played at the event.
Sixteen teams participated in 1991 Rugby World Cup . Eight teams were the quarter finalists of the 1987 Rugby World Cup; the other eight teams were selected by qualifying matches. The sixteen teams were divided into four pools and there were four nations under each pool. The schedule of the game was such that the top two scorers of each pool moved on to the next level-i.e. the quarter final. The teams that made to the quarter finals were Scotland, Western Samoa, England, France, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Canada. Semi-finals were played between England (9) vs. Scotland (6) and Australia (16) vs. New Zealand (6). The final match of 1991 Rugby World Cup was played between Australia and England on 2 nd November, 1991 at Twickenham, London. After a tough competition, the winner's trophy was claimed by Australia by beating England 12-6. Another match was scheduled to be played for the third position, which was played between New Zealand and Scotland on 30 th October in Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff. The third position title was bagged by New Zealand defeating Scotland with a score of 13-6.
