Result of the 1991 Rugby World Cup was not much of a surprise to the rugby world and had one of the strong contenders occupy the throne of world rugby.
The tournament was hosted by England but some of the other European nations also had the chance of being joint hosts of the tournament. These countries were Ireland Scotland, Wales and France.
The 1991 World Cup in England had sixteen teams participating in the tournament and they were to fight for the cup in the group stages as well as the knockout stages of the tournament. The sixteen teams were grouped under four Pools-A, B, C and D with New Zealand, England, Italy and United States in Pool A. Pool B consisted of Scotland, Japan, Zimbabwe and Ireland while Australia, Western Samoa, Wales and Argentina constituted Pool C. The remaining teams who comprised Pool D were Romania, France, Fiji and Canada. New Zealand and England went through to the Quarter Final stages from Pool A along with Scotland and Ireland from Pool B and Australia and Western Samoa from Pool C. France topped Pool D to advance to the Quarter Finals from the Pool along with Canada.
In the Quarter Finals, Scotland triumphed over Western Samoa and England defeated France to face each other in the Semi Finals . Australia and New Zealand were the other two winners in the Quarter Finals edging out Ireland and Canada respectively. The first semi Final saw England triumph over neighbor Scotland while Australia defeated arch rival New Zealand to advance to the Final . The Final in the Twickenham Stadium of London saw Australia and England face each other in the Final in front of a large crowd of supporters. But the spectators were heartbroken when, in spite of their cheering the home team, Australia emerged champions to lift the World Cup and be the crowned king of world Rugby.
