The Chaban - Delmas Stadium, named after the Mayor was inaugurated on 12 June 1938 with a quarterfinal match of the Soccer World Cup between Brazil and Czechoslovakia. This Bordeaux Stadium has a capacity to hold 50,000 spectators. Earlier known as Lescure Stadium with much architectural novelty, the stadium was entitled as one of France's national monuments. The Stadium has been a witness to the various crucial matches such as boxing, hockey and soccer. It has also hosted the finals of 1997-98 Heineken Cup. In 1955 the Lescure Stadium was the venue for the final of the French rugby championship for the first time. The Chaban - Delmas Stadium has hosted two matches in 1999 Rugby World Cup and will host four matches in the RWC 2007.
