The South African rugby team, the semi-finalists in the 1999 Rugby World Cup and the quarter-finalists in the 2003 Rugby World Cup enjoys the 3 rd position in the International Rugby Board world ranking in the year 2006-2007. They have won 14 rugby matches out of the 17 matches played and have scored 556 points. Headed by coach Jake White, they have emerged victorious in many rugby tournaments.
They are identified with their green and gold colored jerseys, white shorts and green and gold colored socks. The jersey has an emblem of Springbok (antelope) and the King Protea (a South African flower). Also refereed as Springboks, they are regarded as one of the best rugby nations in the world.
The first ever South African international took place at Port Elizabeth's cricket ground. They have played in a number of venues throughout South Africa. The Ellis Park in Johannesburg was the main venue that witnessed the victory of the team in the 1995 Rugby World Cup .
