The 20 teams qualified for the 2007 Rugby World Cup are allocated to four pools of five Teams each. In the pool phase of the rugby tournament, each team has to face the other teams within the pool.
The teams have to play 10 Matches in each pool, for a total of 40 matches.
For each pool phase match, the team gets certain match points: Win - 4 points, Draw - 2 points, 4 or more tries - 1 point and Loss by 7 points or less - 1 point. England, South Africa, Samoa, USA and Tonga constitute Rugby World Cup Pool A. The rugby teams are allocated to different pools in accordance with the Rugby World Cup 2007 draw.
In the first quarterfinal match, Winner from the Pool B will have to face the Runner up of Pool A. In the third quarterfinal match winner of Pool A has to face the Runner up of Pool B .
After the completion of the pool phase, the Teams in a pool are ranked one through five based on their cumulative Match points.
