Rugby World Cup 2007

The 2007 rugby world cup, the sixth edition of the tournament will take place in France from September 7 to October 20, 2007. 20 nations from around the globe will compete in the 48 rugby matches, which will last for over 44 days in the 2007 rugby world cup. France won the right to host the event after defeating a bid from England in 2003.
The 2007 Rugby World Cup qualifying round began in 2004. Around 94 rugby teams including 86 regional qualifiers and 8-quarter finalists of the 2003 rugby world cup.The eight-quarter finalists from the 2003 event were qualified automatically for Rugby World cup 2007.

The first match in the 2007 rugby world cup will be held between France and Argentina at St Dennis in France. After the Pool matches that will end on September 30, the rugby quarterfinal matches and the semi final matches will follow. According to rugby world cup fixtures, the final matches will take place on 19th and 20th of October.

Ten of the 42 rugby matches of the 2007 world cup rugby will be held in French cities. Cardiff and Wales will host the four rugby matches and the other two matches will be held in Edinburg, Scotland. The main venues of the world cup rugby 2007 are Chaban-Delmas Stadium in Bordeaux, Murrayfield Edunburg, Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, Felix-Bollaert at Lens, Parc des Princes in Paris, Stada de Franca in Saint Dennis, La Beaujoire in Nantes, Gerland in Lyons, Geoffroy-Guichard at Saint Etienne, La Mosson at Montpellier, Velodrome in Marseilles and the Stadium de Toulouse in Toulouse.

Out of the twenty rugby teams participating, 19 have been qualified for the world cup rugby and the other rugby team will be decided only after the last repechage match at the end of March. The 19 rugby world cup teams include Scotland, Ireland, Wales, England, France, Romania, Italy, Georgia, Canada, United States, Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Namibia, Tonga and South Africa.

The sale of rugby tickets for the rugby world cup 2007 has been commenced. All rugby world cup 2007 tickets for individual seats are being sold in France. The tickets are sold in the forms of packs. There are team packs and city packs in which the later allow entry to a given number of rugby matches selected for a team and the latter allow entry to a single specific match. The individual tickets will provide entry only to a single match. The packs and individual rugby tickets are available at the world cup venues in four price categories. Scoring occurs either by achieving a try or a goal. A try is scored when a player places the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. According to the rugby rules, a try is counted as five points and can gain 2 more points with a successful place kick or drop kick. A drop kick in general play and a penalty kick are worth 3 points. It initiates a ban on passing the rugby ball forwards, so that rugby players can gain ground only by running with the ball or by kicking it. The rugby game with a continuous flow has a constant competition for the rugby ball at the breakdown. These are called Rucks and Mauls. The rugby football has two major codes like rugby league and rugby union. The Rugby league, the national sport of Papua New Guinea is played as a professional as well as amateur sport in Australia, France, Great Britain and New Zealand. Rugby union, a major sport played nationwide in Ireland, France, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Wales and Scotland is also a professional and amateur game.

The rugby is perceived as a rough game and wearing most types of padding and helmets is considered illegal. The rugby players often wear mouth guards and tape down their ears to prevent cauliflower ear.
