The Singapore Rugby Union was formed 1948. The SRU is the governing body for all rugby activities in Singapore. Since then the Union has been working on promoting rugby game in this island nation. They run rugby schools and various other programs throughout the year. They also have training modules for coaches and referees.
The Singapore Rugby Union has two men's and a women's national squad. Both of these squads represent their country in various tournaments worldwide. Singapore, however, is yet to qualify for the World Cup. In 1987 and 1991 they did not play in the qualifiers. From 1995 to 2007, they have failed to get past the first round of Asian qualifiers.
The Singapore Rugby Union hosts many tournaments throughout the year. The National Rugby Championship is the biggest tournament and is played in three divisions: the Premier League, Division 1 and Division 2. The top five teams in Singapore take part in the Premier League. They are Bedok Kings, Brewerkz Buck, San Miguel wanderers, Singapore Armed Forces Sports Association and Singapore Cricket Club.
In order to promote the sport among the youth, the Singapore Rugby Union is also hosting leagues at the youth level. The Standard Chartered National Rugby Youth League takes place every year for people under the age of 20. The Singapore Cup Championship is another annual event on the Singapore Rugby Union calendar. The M1 Rugby Schools Series and National Schools Rugby Championship are two championships which take place at school level. In the M1 Rugby Schools Series there are three categories: under 14, under 17 and under 20.
To make the sport more popular among women, the Singapore Rugby Union hosts two annual meets. They are the Women's Touch League Champions and Women's 7 Contact Champions.
The Union is also engaged in various promotional activities throughout the year. The Singapore Beach Rugby Festival is held every year where you can compete in six different categories. They are Men's Open, Women's Open, Mixed Open, Corporate (Mixed), Boys (Under 20) and Girls (Under 20). In order to enter into the tournament you just need to form a five-member team.
With all these promotional activities in place, rugby is fast becoming more popular in Singapore.
