Rugby Union

Rugby Union is one of the most played outdoor games of this time and is being established as a global sport with the increase of its popularity across the world.

The game owes its birth to a separate form of football played in the Rugby School, England , with rules which were completely different from those of conventional soccer. It is one of the two popular forms of outdoor rugby, the other being Rugby League .

The game of rugby union is played in the rectangular rugby pitch with fifteen players in each team. The ball, being prolate spheroid in shape, is markedly different from the spherical one used in conventional soccer. A single referee and two touch judges are usually in charge of the adult rugby union matches which last for 80 minutes with two 40 minutes halves. For the professional matches, an additional Television Match Official ( TMO ) or a video referee is present. The game is like the American Football but Rugby Union laws forbid players to pass the ball forward. Only backward or sideway passing are allowed. The winner of a game of Rugby is decided on the basis of the points scored. These points can be scored either by scoring drop goals or by scoring through tries which are done by placing the ball in the goal area of the opponents. After the try, a kick at the goal line is attempted, which fetches two points and is called conversion. The game has a number of attacking and defensive terms attached with it like tackle, ruck, maul, set pieces and others. Major international tournaments of Rugby Union are the World Cup , Women's World Cup , Six Nations Championship and Tri-Nations Series .

The game of Rugby Union has crossed its narrow boundaries and reached all corners of the world. Reaching beyond its homeland England, the game of Rugby Union has now become extremely popular in countries like New Zealand, France, Australia, Canada, Romania and many more.
