Tri-Nations tournament is played in both the unions: the Rugby Union and the Rugby League. The two tournaments are played on different rules set by the Rugby Union and the Rugby League respectively.
Rugby Union Tri Nations: The Rugby Union Tri Nations tournament is an annual event, first held in 1996, organized by SANZAR, a joint union of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Australia's Wallabies, All Blacks from New Zealand and South Africa's Springboks are the three teams that take part in this competition. The matches are played on a home-and-away basis. In the beginning the team used to play twice against each other but since 2006 they play thrice.
Since its inception New Zealand has won this championship a record seven times. They are currently on a hat trick having won the 2005 and 2006 editions. Both Australia and South Africa has won it twice each. Tickets for these matches have still not been issued.
Rugby League Tri Nations: The Rugby League Tri Nations is played amongst the top three teams in the world. This tournament began in 1999 with the aim of having a tournament for the top three rugby nations. Previously the teams played once against each other with the top two teams competing in the final. From 2004 this scenario has changed. Now the teams play twice against each other on a home-and-away basis. The top two teams after the round-robin league compete in the final.
The teams are awarded two points for a win and one for a draw. It is held in October every year. Australia has been the dominant force in this championship, winning it five times. New Zealand and England have won it one time each. Tickets are yet to be issued for this year's edition of the Rugby League Tri nations.
