Gura Humorului is a city in the eastern European country of Romania. It is located in Suceava County in southern Bukovina. The city has a history of Jewish persecution during the Second World War.
Gura Humorului was established in 1775. The territory was under the administration of Austria at that time. The Austrian government encouraged the migration of persons from other places to Gura Humorului in Romania in order to assert administrative control over the region. Many people of varied ethnicities participated in the migration to Gura Humorului. The first Jewish immigrant came in 1835. The total population of the region comprised Armenians, Hungarians, Germans, Ukrainians, and people of Polish ancestry. Many native Romanians also settled in Gura Humorului at that time.
The city of Gura Humorului in Romania was devastated by a big fire in 1899. The fire destroyed many buildings in the town. The town was rebuilt with expatriate money from the United States. Gura Humorului came under Romanian control in 1919. The city was pushed to oblivion during the Second World War when many of Gura Humorului’s Jewish residents were forcefully sent to concentration camps scattered all over Europe. The city is a sparsely populated one. A few Jews still live in the city.
