About 80% of the island is beneath a thick ice sheet that in places thickens up to 4 ft and above. The western coast of the country has a comparatively warmer climate. 6ºC is the average summer temperature .
In few places at times temperature increases. For example the summer temperature in Nuuk, a city located at the western coast, rises up to 10ºC. Weather Greenland's eastern regions are much colder than the western coast. Even in summer frozen temperature often occurs. Heavy rainfall takes place in every three days in the southern part of the country. The central part of Greenland summer temperature hardly reaches above the freezing line. The winter temperature varies from -20ºC to -60ºC.
Greenland is considered as the perfect environment for all kind of meteorological and climatic studies and researches. The condition and effect of global warming is analyzed in and from Greenland by carefully monitoring the movements of the large sheets of ice that covers most of the land. Ice samples are also used for analyzing the climatic conditions thousands of years ago.
