Weather Related Disasters

Weather-related disasters occur when the forces of nature react against negative changes occurring in the normal cycle of weather on earth. For understanding weather-related disasters it is important to understand the concept of disasters. Disasters are the effect of natural or human hazards, which result in great loss of human life and property. It is a little difficult to categorize the disasters into human or natural ones. Due to the changes occurring in the ecosystem some of the disasters can also be interrelated, the most common example being tectonic activities, which result to earthquakes can also end up in disastrous Tsunamis.

Disasters related to weather can also be called as natural disaster because most of the disasters occur as a result of unusual weather conditions and are categorized into climate related disasters. They can also result from geological changes or water related disasters like rainfall resulting in flood.

Some of the Weather-related disasters are the following:

Avalanche : Avalanches are common mostly in the snowy mountainous regions where a large mass of snow slides down the mountain slope, gathers mass and speed and destroys anything that comes in its way.

Earthquakes : Earthquakes are caused due to the tectonic activities in earth and sudden release of energy and pressure. Earthquakes are seismic activities, which may also lead to volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.

Floods : Floods occur when a water body overflows due to continuous rainfall and absence of proper drainage. This makes the excess water overflow to the surrounding land and cause great damage to life and property.

Tsunami : Tsunamis are caused by massive tectonic movements below the ocean body, underwater explosions or volcanic eruptions near the water body. Due to this series of waves of great height and force hit the shores and destroy any sign of life coming in its way.

Volcanic eruption : This is also another form of sudden outlet for the pressure, which builds up inside the earth in the form of molten lava and gaseous material.

Drought : Drought is an extreme weather condition where the absence of rainfall causes in deficiency of water in a particular region.

Lahar : Lahar is a mudflow, which falls down from volcanoes.

The other weather related activities are Dust Devil and Waterspout .
