Wind chill is a weather phenomenon which relates how cold any person or animal feels in the open during cold weather.

Wind Chill Temperature and Factor:

The wind chill temperature depends on the rate of loss of heat from the uncovered skin of the body. This is caused by cold and wind. The increasing rate of wind pulls out the heat from the body thereby lowering the body temperature. So one gets a sensation of feeling more cold during winter when the wind blows. Thus windy winter days appear to be bitterly colder than other days of winter months. This effect of wind is known as the wind chill factor . The quicker the wind blows the quicker the body gets cold.

Calculation of Wind Chill Factor:

Wild chill has the capacity of transforming a moderately cold winter day into unbearable and often dangerously fatal. It can be calculated for different temperatures in the Fahrenheit scale and the speed of the wind in miles per hour. For example the wind chill amounts to 19°F when the temperature is about 0°F and the wind speed is 15 miles/hour. This wind chill temperature is sufficient for freezing uncovered skin in just half an hour. Wind chill is not affected by relative humidity.

Effects of Wind Chill :

•  Wind chill can seriously affect the human body in the form of frostbites. The fingers, toes, nose and ear lobes are very susceptible to it and the tissues may freeze.

•  There can also be a sharp drop in body temperature and result in a condition called Hypothermia. One should protectively cover the body to prevent these diseases.

•  Wind Chill can also affect inanimate things like water pipes and car radiators.

Wind chill is experienced by people when the external temperature gets colder due to strong winds.
