Ozone Layer

About Ozone Layer: Ozone layer is a topic of study which is connected with weather and environment. In reality the ozone layer is not an actual layer but it is so termed because of the ozone particles which are found between 12 to 30 miles up in the stratosphere (which is a layer of the earth's atmosphere). Ozone is formed by a process of photolysis when the Sun's UV rays acts upon oxygen molecules. This ozone layer acts as a filter, blocking the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the Sun.

The Cause of Ozone Layer Depletion:

When there is no pollution, there is an equilibrium between the quantity of ozone that is produced and broken down. A large “hole” in the ozone layer has been discovered over Antarctica and there are many reasons for this destruction. The major cause of ozone depletion is the use of artificial compounds like CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons, which release bromine and chlorine. CFCs are used abundantly in refrigerator and air conditioner coolants, cleansing solvents, blowing agents in fire extinguishers and in aerosols. A single free CFC atom has the capacity of destroying a number of ozone molecules for a great length of time.

Effects of Ozone Layer Depletion:

The depletion of the ozone layer can result in various hazards like:
  • Increase in the quantity of ultraviolet radiation. Since the ozone layer is disturbed a larger amount of the radiation is able to penetrate it and reach the earth.
  • Serious skin cancers of different types like Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Malignant Melanoma
  • Destruction of plankton and important crops.
Though a stop has been put on the use of CFCs the destruction of the ozone layer will go on for a good part of the 21st century.

The Problems of Greenhouse Effect are:

  • Human health is affected
  • There is a rise in th sea level
  • Weather conditions get extreme
Greenhouse Effect is a serious threat to weather and environment and countries across the world are implementing various policies to check this problem.
