Greenhouse Effect

Greenhouse effect is the way in which the Earth's surface gets heated due to the infrared radiations of the atmosphere and this affects weather and environment. This discoverer of this phenomenon was Joseph Fourier and it was analyzed by Svante Arrhenius. It gets its name from a similar process which takes place in greenhouses made of glass where plants grow with the help of the trapped heat of the Sun.

The Cause of Greenhouse Effect:

The sole source of heat energy of the Earth is the Sun which releases solar radiation primarily as ultraviolet energy and shortwave energy. When this energy moves toward the surface of the Earth, about 25% of it gets absorbed into the atmosphere and an equal amount gets reflected back by the clouds into the space. The rest of the radiation heats the Earth and in turn a substantial amount of energy is released by the Earth as long wave infrared rays. This radiation is trapped by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and water vapor. As a result of this the atmosphere starts behaving like a greenhouse which does not impede the solar radiation but imprisons the earth's long wave radiation. This keeps the Earth much warmer than it would have been if it did not have an atmosphere.

Rise of Greenhouse Effect:

Over the ages greenhouse effect has triggered at an alarming rate because of the following reasons:
  • Excessive utilization of fossil fuels
  • Clearing of forests
  • Industrial activities
  • Release of Chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs)

The Problems of Greenhouse Effect are:

  • Human health is affected
  • There is a rise in th sea level
  • Weather conditions get extreme
Greenhouse Effect is a serious threat to weather and environment and countries across the world are implementing various policies to check this problem.
