WEATHER

Stormglass

Stormglass is one of the most commonly used weather forecasting device . This weather instrument is a liquid filled sealed container made of glass. The liquid used is basically a mixture of several ingredients like distilled water, ammonium chloride, ethanol, camphor and potassium nitrate. The weather forecast can be determined by observing the appearance of this liquid.

Stormglass was invented approximately between the 17th and 18th century in England. The instrument was first used by Robert Fitzroy in his voyage. In his historical voyage he discovered that the Stormglass predicts the weather. He arrived at this conclusion from the following observations:

•  When the liquid in the Stormglass is clear, the weather would be sunny and clear.

•  If the liquid is cloudy the weather would also be cloudy.

•  Small dots in the liquid symbolized humid or foggy weather.

•  Thunderstorms were indicated by the cloudy and tinny starred liquid.

•  The coming of snow is indicated by the small stars in the liquid.

•  If there are crystals at the bottom of the container it indicates frost.

•  A windy day would be indicated by several threads near the top of the container.

•  Large flakes throughout the liquid indicate snowy weather in winter and cloudy in temperate seasons.

From the weather predictions made by the Stormglass, it appears that the device can provide a very convenient, useful and efficient method to predict weather. However the procedure in which the device can actually be made to work has not yet been discovered, due to the incomplete knowledge of its inherent mechanism.
