The Ceiling Projector is a type of weather instrument used for measuring the height of the base of clouds. The Ceiling Projector is also referred as a cloud searchlight. Positioned at 304.8 m away, the ceiling projector is used in a conjunction with an alidade. It could be set at the same level at any position.
The Ceiling Projector or the cloud searchlight is normally set at an angle of 90° in relation to the terrain. But 71° 31' angle is also used. There is a 430 W luminous bulb fit inside the projector within a weatherproof housing. The housing also consists of two mirrors. The first one is fitted above the bulb. It reflects the light of the glowing bulb on to the second mirror. Light is then reflected up towards the cloud from the second mirror. Both the mirrors are attached in a manner that they produce a high intensity beam of light, which can deliver an obvious spot on the base of the cloud.
The alidade on the other hand is mounted on a post of 1.524 m high from the ground. The alidade has a pointer and an arm. One end of it has a slight opening and the other end has a rubber eye piece. Like the alidade, the arm is also mounted on a curved scale. The observer can look through the eye hole and can set the spot projected on the cloud and thus can read the height from scale attached to it.
