Clouds

Cloud is state of water mass that is visible although not liquid in nature. Cloud means a mass of water droplets that are in the form of small ice crystals. When the droplets of a water mass gets concentrated among themselves, clouds are formed. Clouds are in fact another state of water vapor. The water vapors condense and form little crystals of snow. When the amount of these ice crystals increases and reach a height, clouds are formed.

The study of Clouds:

The development of science has enabled the scientists to culture the nature of clouds. The study of clouds is called nephology. Nephology is in fact a branch of meteorology that is the study of weather. The word “nephology” has derived from the Greek word, “nephos” that literally means cloud. Nephology includes various subjects such as the different types of clouds, the nature of all the types and so on.

Different Types of Clouds:
  • Cumulonimbus clouds: Cumulonimbus is a type of thundercloud. These types of clouds are responsible for the thunderstorms and heavy rainfalls.
  • Stratus clouds: The stratus clouds are seen in a lower altitude. These are quite opposite of the convective types of clouds that are seen in a very high altitude. Sometimes these stratus clouds are white in color and sometimes are gray.

  • Cumulus clouds: Cumulus clouds are seen in a very clear sky. These are very light in nature. The cumulus cloud is known for its ability to generate wind in the atmosphere.
  • Cirrus clouds: It is a cloud formation that is characterized by small ice crystals. This cloud can give you the indication of upper air disturbance accompanied by thunderstorms.
  • Nimbus clouds: These clouds are generally dark precipitous clouds that come in the forms of raindrops, snowflakes, sleet and hail.
