In a Key Telephone System there are separate buttons for each line that is connected to each telephone. The key telephone system is popular for their inflated and expanded form. The key telephone system is based on three architectural technique. These are :

  • Electromechanical shared-control key systems : This key system was made out from the electromechanical components in earlier days. Now the system operates through large scale integrated circuits. This telephone system was known as 1A2 Key System in North America.
  • Electronic shared-control systems : This is a modern telephone system. Earlier this key system was operated through relays, later on large scale integrated circuits made the implementation of this key system easier and cheaper. The many-wire cabling system was replaced with single cable wire. With this telephone system one can gain the facility of using answering machines, automatic accounting of the calls received, dialed and missed, caller ID, speed dialing etc. A remote supervision of the entire phone system is also possible with the advent of this mechanism. This telephone system was majorly put into use by the AT&T Merlin.
  • Independent key systems : Large scale integrated circuits helped in getting this telephone system implemented in individual telephone sets.
  • Apart from the above mentioned telephone systems there are other modern telephone systems like the PBX System and the Hybrid Key phone system. These systems are digital in nature. The analog telephone systems have switched over to PBXes. With the PBX telephone system there is a scope of getting more features and facilities in a telephone.
