Local Telephone Service is the supply of telecommunication network system that is limited within a certain area. In early days small companies supplied the local telephone service in a city or town. The local telephone service had the responsibility of providing telecommunication service and port the local call with the long distance call carriers. Until 1996, when de-regulation came into the scenario, the local calls were patched with long distances telephone network.
In United States of America , the local telephone service were in full swing up till the year 1980, mostly in the rural areas. The local telephone companies had the responsibility of providing both the telephone service and telephone equipment.

The telephone set were given on lease to the customers, they were not sold. The local telephone services in the recent era provide Private Branch Exchange (PBX) to give the Internet connection and the telephone set.
Local Telephone service works through the wire system, the wire terminus is set at the central telephone exchange. With time and technical advancements the system has improved to provide the customers with Caller Id, voice mail, call waiting options and many other facilities.
