Cable and wireless was the first company in the United Kingdom which offered an alternative telephone service besides the British telecoms. Cable and wireless also provided cable TV service to its customers for some time but later sold its rights to NTL in the year 2000.
The history of Cable and wireless company can be traced back to a number of British Telegraph companies founded in the 1860s with Sir John Pender as the founder. The Cable and wireless company still remains the the main line provider in places like the British Virgin Islands, Maldives, Monaco, Seychelles, the Falkland Islands, St. Helena,Cayman Islands, Panama, Macau,and Guernsey.
Cable and wireless company always had a prominent presence and a strong market in most of the British colonies and provided local telephone service there. The cable and wireless company had a virtual monopoly amongst the Caribbean colonies but with the introduction of a more competitive mentality in the region this monopoly has been dismantled.
