Pagers

Pagers , also known as beepers , are electronic devices used for communication through a paging network. Pagers utilize the radio transmissions to link between a call center or control and the recipient. The modern pagers implement the FLEX on-air protocol. In the recent years the pagers are used in the offices and specifically for work purposes and not for personal needs.

Pagers are used to notify emergency, for instance, to the lifeboat men or firefighters. They are also carried by doctors and nurses in the medical establishments to call them during emergencies. Ironically pagers are widely used by the IT world like cellular telephone company to call the technicians. Let's imagine if there is a service interruption in the cellular network that would also mean that the technicians could not be summoned due to outage in the network. To avoid such a situation technicians and engineers are generally equipped with a pager that operates on a different mobile network to guarantee all time accessibility during emergencies. The contemporary paging systems utilize the simulcast delivery, by satellite controlled networks to make them more reliable than the terrestrial based cellular networks.

The widespread popularity of mobile phones has declined the use of pagers . But they still remain in use in places where mobile network is irregular and where functions of radio transmitters implemented in cellular phones is prohibited like in large hospital establishments. Technology of pagers is also used in traffic signals and irrigation control systems.
