Fax

Fax is the process of transferring copies of documents by implementing telecommunications technology. Fax is the short form of facsimile which from Latin translation means to make a copy. Fax transfers facsimiles or documents by using a fax machine over the telephone network and hence it is also known as telecopier .

A fax machine includes a modem, an image scanner and an inkjet, thermal or laser printer united with a single package. The content printed on a hard copy is converted into digital image by a scanner, the image data is send over a phone line to another device by the modem and the transmitted copy of the document is produced at the other end through a printer. The fax machine attached to a computer is called a multifunction printer or MFPs

The modern fax machines became popular during the mid- 1970s. Japan was the first country to introduce the digital fax machines and they had the advantage over competing technologies like the teleprinter. Gradually easy to use input method editors were invented and faxing became popular throughout the world during the 1980s.

The technology of faxing is increasingly facing a tough competition from the internet-based system but it is still in use in many companies. The main advantage of using a fax machine is the transmission of sensitive materials which due to the restrictions like HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley, cannot be transmitted over the internet unencrypted.

In the recent years, the corporate sectors are replacing the fax machines with the more sophisticated and improved standalone fax machines. These kinds of machines are very useful as they cut down the cost by reducing unnecessary printouts and lessen the number of inbound analog phone lines required by the office.
