The 999 silver coins were not like the usual world coinage featuring the head of the state.
The silver coins are crafted with special care as they highlight the economy, political, social, artistic and cultural condition of the contemporary period. There are great many examples of the silver coins but those with 0.999 fineness are called or known as 999 silver coins.
Almost all the countries of the world produce the .999 silver coins. The greatest examples of the 999 silver coins include- Silver American Eagle which was first minted in 1986 and are the only silver bullion coins whose weight, content and purity is approved by the American Government. The Silver Eagle design is based on the 1916 half-dollar coin as designed by Adolph Weimman’s ‘walking liberty’. Australian lunar series has produced the Silver Australian Dragon and the Silver Australian Snake. Silver Australian Kookaburro minted annually is available in four sizes and the design changes every year. The Canadian Maple Leaf made its first appearance in 1979 and is guaranteed by the Canadian government. China is also in the line with its Silver Chinese Panda featuring the Panda on one side and the temple of Tian Tian on the other. This makes the coin exquisite. The oldest example of 999 silver coin that we come across are the 8 doubles which were first minted in 1830 under legal tender and was released gradually until 1966 with one, two and four doubles. The ancient seal of the states of Guernsey bore 3 lions of England, crowned later to become leopards is shown as surmounted on a broom or ‘planta genista’, the Edward’s badge of rank. The native language of the state was Guernesey which was evident on the coin. There is the royal seal of King Edward I on the obverse side with the reverse featuring the coin denomination along with the minting year and the purity mark bearing on the historic Guernesey double design. The 1 troy ounce coins of 32 mm diameter weighs 31.1035 gm. The silver coins highlight the wealth of a country’s economy and are thereby of great importance. |
