Turquoise is a much valued and popular gemstone which is believed to be capable of apprising its wearer about imminent portents. It has a definite history behind it. This gemstone chemically is a phosphate of aluminum or copper and is hydrated.

HISTORY OF TURQUOISE:
  • NAME: The name Turquoise may have originated from the French version of Turkey, called 'Turquie', since this gemstone used to be found in those areas mostly.
  • ORIGIN: Turquoise can be said to be the earliest gemstone known to human beings. Traces of this stone were found in the civilization of Egypt as well as in the middle and South American civilizations. The pharaohs were in the habit of wearing Turquoise. Even the American Indians used to wear this gem for good luck.


  • FAITHS AND BELIEFS ASSOCIATED WITH TURQUOISE: Several layers of myths and beliefs are attached with this gemstone. This varies from culture to culture or place to place. But in general, Turquoise is believed to bring good fortune. It is also believed that a Turquoise gives indications to its wearer about impending dangers.
  • COLOR AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE: Turquoise usually comes in a bright sky blue color. But it can also be found in several other colors like green and other green blue variations. In ancient times, it was a belief that if a Turquoise's color fades, then the wearer may encounter some danger or experience the dissipation of a lover’s or friend's love and affection.
  • CURATIVE VALUE: Turquoise was believed to have some curative values. There was a faith that it could cure blindness or treat injuries of accident.
  • PRODUCERS OF TURQUOISE: Turquoise is mainly found in Iran. But it can also be found in several areas in USA.
  • PROPERTIES: Turquoise is not very hard and measures near 6 on the Moh's scale. Its Specific Gravity is 2.6-2.9 and Refractive Index is 1.61-1.65.
Turquoise, with its discovery starting from some unknown days in ancient times can really be regarded as a companion of man in gem form.
