Tanzanite, a mineral variety of Zoisite is a very attractive gemstone. Zoisite along with Thulite, is used as ring stones. But Tanzanite because of its fragility is not that much appropriate a gem for making jewelries. However, Tanzanite has an interesting discovery history attached to its name.
  • HISTORY OF DISCOVERY OF TANZANITE: Tanzanite was discovered first in Arusha in Tanzania in the year 1967. The Goan tailor De Souza, is the person who discovered this gemstone. He took the stone to an efficient geologist J. Saul who sent it to the Gemological Institute in America through his father H. Saul and there the gem was correctly identified.
  • ORIGIN OF THE NAME: This gemstone was first named as 'Dumortierite' by the Goan tailor who discovered it. But Tiffani & Co., the company renowned for dealing with gemstones, named it after the name of the place of origin of the gemstone. That is why it is now called Tanzanite as it was discovered in Tanzania.
OTHER INTERESTING FACTS ASSOCIATED WITH TANZANITE:
  • The name of a company, called Tanzanite One Ltd., is closely associated with the marketing of this gemstone. Starting from 2005, this company has achieved to get hold of the Tanzanite market in a way similar to De Beers. They follow certain marketing strategies which can familiarize this gemstone with the consumers and accelerate its sales.
  • Tanzanite can be found in a variety of blue and purple colors. It has an interesting specialty because it shows different colors when viewed from different angles.
  • Just like some other precious gemstones, Tanzanite is also believed to have some curative powers. It gives vent to extra mental pressure making a person feel calmer. At the same time, Tanzanite is supposed to exacerbate a person's creative energy.
