Rubellite is a very attractive semi-precious gemstone belonging to a group called Tourmalines under which fall 6 gemstones. The name comes from the Latin term 'rebellus' meaning 'reddish'. This gemstone draws attention to itself through its dazzling shades of ruby red, reddish purple to light and very bright pinks. Rubellite is a form of Elbaite which comes in a variety of colors. The crystals are hexagonal and prismatic in shape and can surprisingly expand up to a length of 3 feet. It can effortlessly be identified by its cross section which is triangular and distended.
The crystals of Rubellite can be opaque or transparent having a glassy luster. They are pyroelectric, that is, they can be given charge through electricity. Since high temperatures and pressure are required for its formation, it forms with metamorphic and igneous rocks. Sometimes the stones are treated with heat to enhance the red color. The perfect Rubellite should have good clarity and sometimes fillers are used to enhance the clarity. The stones are fairly hard with hardness ranging from 7 to 7.5.
