Pearl

Pearl is a very beautiful and precious gemstone which is either naturally produced by oysters or are created artificially. Pearls are artificially cultivated in large numbers because they have a worldwide demand. Based on the method of their production, pearls are divided into two categories- Natural Pearl and Cultural Pearl. Till date, the biggest pearl was discovered in Philippines, in the island of Palawan in 1934 which weighed 6.4 kg.

Pearls are used to create elegant jewelries such as ear-rings and pendants and they are also used as primary adorning materials.

Prior to the 20th century, the practice of cultivating pearls was very much prevalent. But most of the pearls which are found today are cultural pearls. Natural and cultural pearls look almost identical and their differences can be found only by proper examination and testing.

Today, most of the natural pearls come from Bahrain and Australia. Obviously, natural pearls are expensive ones because they are hard to get. The widely desired Melo Pearls and Keshi Pearl are some of the best quality natural pearls. On the other hand, black pearls are one of the prime examples of cultured pearls.

Pearls are available in different shapes such as round, semi-round, pear, button, baroque, oval, drop, and ringed.
