Onyx

Onyx’s popularity dates back to the Greek and Roman periods - Onyx is a recognized type of quartz which is derived from Agate stones. Its name is derived from a Greek word, “onyx” which means nail.

Onyx is available in a wide number of colors and is also marked by immense popularity. But the most popular and expensive one is a black onyx which is used to make beautiful jewelries. Black Onyx is known for the cross section of white layers which become prominent if the body of the stone is black. This gives it a unique look from outside. They are also known as ‘zebra agate’. It is easily found in every type of quartz.

But the most commonly found onyx is white or brown in color. It is also known as Sardonyx. They are highly popular mainly because of the good amount of seals found in them which are known to be non-sticky. Onyx is also popular because of the great quality of luster that it generates.

These stones are generally shaped as cabochons. Most of the onyx originates as a result of the discoloration of agate. Its hardness in Mohs scale is estimated to be 7 and its gravity is 2.65 to 2.667.

Onyx stones are of great value in today’s world of highly furnished houses because they are most importantly used to make different kinds of marble such as Bardiglio, Blue Venato, Calacatta Gold, White Venatino, and Giallo Siena. Another important product of onyx is tiles. These marbles and tiles will surely make your apartment look gorgeous and sophisticated.
