Garnet

A necklace made of red garnet can give a posh touch to your whole party look for the evening. The idea that garnet is just red in color is very much wrong. It has been the collection of the elites of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. The legendary tale of the Noah’s Ark also has the mention of garnet in it. This gemstone was responsible for illuminating the boat. Though going to buy a garnet with such assumptions would be very far fetched. There are two views suggesting the reasons behind the evolvement of the name garnet. The Greek word ‘granatus’ meaning grain is associated with garnet and even the rich red color of the pomegranate seeds is taken as a possible explanation.

The chemical formula of garnet is X3Y2(SiO4)3. The chemical compositions of the stones vary with the types of garnet. The main types of garnet available on the face of earth are pyrope, almandine, spessartite, grossular, uvarovite and andarite. Some of the garnets which are not red in color are recently discovered.

The names of these stones are cachemirine, grossular, Malaya, mandarin, etc. The places where this semi precious stone is found in abundance are United States, Myanmar, Nigeria, Switzerland, Australia and Brazil.

The constantly growing demand of garnet is the jewelry industry has led to the production of synthetic garnets. Garnets in its natural raw form are not that attractive but the skill of the cutters brings out the magic in them. The recent discoveries of yellow and green garnets are milestones for the gemstone industry. A garnet necklace is fit for every occasion and every season and you are sure to make a fashions statement by wearing one.
