Citrine

Jewellery made of Citrine with its shine and glow brings sunshine to those dull and gloomy days of November. Citrine is a gemstone and one of the varieties of quartz crystal with little impurities of ferric iron. It is also known by the names ‘Citrine Quartz’ and ‘Citrine Topaz’. Citrine comes in various shades of yellow and orange. Most of the Citrines do not form naturally. The naturally formed Citrines are usually pale yellow in color. The orange and reddish colored Citrines are produced by heating amethyst or smoky quartz at high temperature.

Naturally mined Citrine is largely produced in Brazil. Rio Grande do Sul is the state that produces maximum amount of the entire production. The name Citrine has derived from its color. The natural color of the gemstone is similar to the color of the lemon. According to the ‘Mohs scale’ the hardness of Citrine is 7 and is to some extent scratch proof. The Citrine provides a whole range of colors starting from lemon yellow to bright orange and reddish brown.

Citrine is used both as gemstones as well as ornamental stone. It is largely used to make fascinating, earrings, necklace, bracelets, bangles and all other jewelries both for men and women. Citrine is considered to be the traditional birthstone for the month of November. In early days Citrine was also used as a protection against snake venoms and bad or evil thoughts.

Citrine, for its color is often mistaken as topaz which is much more expensive. This unfortunately creates an illusion and the unscrupulous dealers take full advantage of it.
