Spoonmaker’s Diamond

The Spoonmaker’s Diamond, though the name may sound a bit unconventional, is the pride of the Topkapi Palace Museum. It is the most precious diamond on display at the museum. The 86 carat diamond in the shape of a pear is also popularly known as Kasikci. This unique piece of diamond is encompassed by a dazzling double row of 49 old mine cut diamonds highlighting its beauty while hanging in a glass case on the wall of one of the rooms of the treasury.

The origin of the Spoonmaker’s Diamond is not clear but there are many fantastic tales coming down the ages that give an idea about it. The Spoonmaker’s Diamond is one of the world’s most famous diamonds. There are about 22 world famous diamonds and this Spoonmaker’s Diamond is one of them apart from the Koh-I-Noor or the Derya-i-nur (also known as the Sea of Light) or the Southern Star Diamond which top the list. The ageless beauty of the diamond has lead to many researches surrounding it and experts have opined that the 2 rows of brilliantly crafted diamonds are later additions. They were added on by the orders of either Tepedelenli Ali Pasa or by Mahmud II.

These later additions have enhanced the beauty of the diamond to a great extent and have left every spectator delving into the past because of the memories stirred up by the Spoonmaker’s Diamond. The Topkapi Palace Museum drawing thousands of spectators from around the globe has always been a favorite haunt of queens and mothers of Sultans because of its deathless beauty.
