Premier Rose Diamond is one of the largest colorless diamonds in the world. The gem was mined from the “Premier Mine” in South Africa in the month of March 1978. “Mouw Diamond Cutting” (Johannesburg) in collaboration with “William Goldberg” (New York) purchased the diamond. It was named after Mrs. Rose Mouw.
The diamond was cut into three separate gems and was known as the “Premier Rose” family. The cutting was done in South Africa. The largest diamond among these three is still popular by the name Premier Rose. The two other comparatively smaller diamonds were known as “Little Rose” and “Baby Rose”. These diamonds weighs 31.48 carat and 2.11 carat respectively.
With 16 days of constant effort the Premier Rose Diamond finally received its current pear like shape. The diamond was cut and polished by David du Plessis. The Premier Rose Diamond has 189 facets which hugely increases its radiance. It weighs around 137.02 carats (27.4 gram) and measures 43.40mm x 23.20mm x 18.93mm in average. Premier Rose Diamond has been rated as the world’s fifth heaviest pear-shaped diamond. The Premier Rose Diamond was certified by the “Gemological Institute of America” (GIA) and was graded as the ‘D-color, Flawless’ diamond.
The Premier Rose Diamond was sold in 1979 by the “William Goldberg Diamond Corporation”. The price of the diamond at that time was $10,000,000. The Premier Rose Diamond currently is owned by Robert Mouawad, a well-known collector of famous and precious diamonds.
