The Lesotho Promise diamond is considered to be occupying the tenth position among the most famous and largest diamonds of the world. This diamond was found in a small South African region, Lesotho. The size of the diamond is slightly bigger than a golf ball. Discovered at the Letseng mine in Lesotho, the famous Lesotho Promise diamond weighs around six hundred and three carats. In the year 1967, another famous diamond “Lesotho brown” was recovered from the same mine field.
Located in the Maluti mountains in South Africa, Letseng is a famous mine known for its high class diamonds. In its rough state, the Lesotho Promise diamond had a value of $12 million. Having an unusual color, the rare Lesotho Promise diamond has been rated as “D” which is supposed to be the best color for rare diamonds found across the globe. The first announcement of the recovery of this precious stone was done by the owners of the Letseng mine, the Gem Diamond Mining Company of Africa Ltd (Gem Diamonds) and its associate the Lesotho government.
Colored white this scintillating diamond is one of the largest diamond in the world with immense historic importance. In the year 2006, 4th October, this diamond was being up for sale in Antwerp. During that time the tender was being floated and the highest bidder got the ownership of the diamond. The whole processing of bidding took place at the Antwerp World Diamond Centre. The famous Lesotho Promise diamond went in the hand of the South African Diamond Corporation. This rare stone was cut in a heart shape and the fragments of this diamond were also being sold out.
