Dresden Green

Dresden Green Diamond is a stupendous natural colored diamond that reflects a green shade and weighs 40.70 carats. The Dresden Green name was adopted from the capital of Saxony where it was exhibited for more than 200 years.

The diamond was supposed to have derived from the diamond mines sited in the district of Golconda in India. The large green diamond reached London in 1726 via Marcus Moses who was an imperative diamond merchant of the time. The Dresden Green was cut and cultured in London. In 1741 the diamond was owned by Frederick Augustus II, the King of Poland. The diamond was sold to the king of Poland by a Jewish merchant named Dallas at the Great Annual Easter Fair at Leipzig for the sum of 30,000 .

The green color of the diamond is the most attractive feature of the stone. This phenomenon has a scientific explanation that the green color is generally the outcome of the crystals colliding with a radioactive supply at several positions during its life span and from geological point of view this life span is measured in millions of years. The most frequent form of irradiation diamonds develops through bombardment by alpha particles which are present in uranium compounds or infiltrate groundwater.

These bombarded particles on prolong exposure forms a green spot on the exterior of the diamond or sometimes fabricates a slender green coating which is only skin deep and can easily be removed during the surfacing process. If the bombardment process takes place by beta and gamma rays with neutrons then the green color of the stone obtained is of greater depth and can turn the whole interior of the stone as green.

The Dresden Green Diamond is established as an astonishing quality stone that is a rare type IIa diamond. The GIA certified the clarity grade as VS1with superior polish and the precious stone posses a flawless interior. The dimension of the gem measures 29.75 x 19.88 x 10.29mm. The Dresden Green Diamond is exhibited at Albertinium Museum in Dresden.
