Abaco

Abaco is one among the other browsers, which is said to be a “lame” web browser. It operates for Plan 9 from Bell Labs as a text based as well as a graphical browser.

Features of Abaco

Some of the functioning properties of Abaco are:

  • It supports features like frames, tables and inline images.
  • It possesses a real interface, that supports multiple documents.
  • It is also based on the interface of acme, which is a graphical shell and text editor from Bell Labs, under Plan 9.
  • It has an OSI approved license.

  • Plan 9

At Bell Labs, a web file system called webfs and a library for analyzing HTML pages, called libhtml, were written to serve an evolving web browser. However this project was postponed for some reason. A person named Aki Nyrhinen wrote “webpage”, which was an elementary frontend, and could render normal web pages very well.

It used the “plumber” very interestingly to support different hyperlinks. Unfortunately this work too, was somehow stalled. Now it has been replaced by Abaco and its writer is Federico G. Benavento. It bases itself on “webpage” and has many new features like table support. The other web browsers from Plan 9 are links, mothra and i.

Today Abaco is recovering very quickly from the previous problems and soon it may also include the feature of CSS support.
