Today there are innumerable terminologies, buzz-words and standards of videoconferencing. This makes it too complicated to understand the compatibility and availability of various products of the videoconferencing industry. International Telecommunications Union

The International Telecommunications Union or ITU determines the standards of videoconferencing. When products follow the standards of videoconferencing set by the union, users are allowed to participate in the conference. There are also standards for desktop videoconferencing which make sure they are compatible throughout the world.

The union was previously named Consultative Committee on International Telegraphy and Telephony. The organization has defined 3 basic umbrellas of the standards of videoconferencing, which are:

• ITU H.320 : It is called the standard PSTN or public switched telephone networks. It is also known as videoconferencing over ISDN or integrated services digital networks and BRI (basic rate interface). H.320 can also be used on some dedicated networks, the examples of which are satellite based networks and T1.
• ITU H.323 : It is called the standard for video over IP or Internet Protocol. It is also used on VoIP or voice over IP.
