Newsgroups

Newsgroups are the central location meant for storing and preserving messages that are being posted by millions of Internet Users from varied locations. Newsgroups are usually associated with Usenet. Newsgroups are made decipherable with the help of newsreader software.

Newsgroup Providers

A number of organizations and enterprises host newsgroup servers. However, newsgroup servers are mainly hosted by the different Internet Service Providers. Access to such servers are even sold or rented for, by different companies who provide with the facility.



Newsgroups Functioning

The common practice is that the different hosts of news server enter into an agreement to coordinate. As a result, when a particular message is stored in a particular news server, the server shares the message with the other servers with which it has an agreement. This is how a newsgroup functions.

Types of Newsgroups

Newsgroups can be of two specific types. They are Binary Newsgroup and Text Newsgroup. It can be said that these two are differentiated only by their names as there is hardly any technological differentiation between the two.






Newsgroup Usenet Hierarchies

Newsgroups are organized hierarchically where the messages arranged on the basis of their topics. There are seven Usenet Hierarchies into which a Newsgroup is generally arranged. They are:-

•  misc

Usenet Newsgroups vary in their popularity. Today, there are almost 20,000 active Newsgroup.
