Mental Health Issues

A person is said to be mentally healthy when he or she is psychologically and emotionally healthy to the level of successfully using his or her emotions and knowledge. State of mental health implies that the person is able to contribute to the best of his abilities, contributing utmost as a conscious social being. As it is said, a healthy mind ensures a healthy body and the other way round.

A mentally healthy person can be identified by various indicators like handling standard stress levels, having positive social relationships, living as a conscious individual and recovering from crisis positively. There are many mental health issues that need to be handled to ensure that mental illness does not take over an individual.

There are a whole range of mental health issues that need to be handled properly to ensure mental health for individuals. These include:

Substance Abuse: Substance abuse among young people can lead to many problems, but continued abuse resulting to serious mental problems is perhaps the most serious. This can lead to depression, dependence and cynicism. The main substances abused are alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, LSD, Heroine, Cocaine, etc.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is caused by genes, stress, life changes, etc and is a very common disorder. It has three main parts – Anxiety, Obsession, Compulsion and a person affected by OCD reacts obsessively about certain issues. OCD can be treated by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Anorexia and Bulimia: Aneroxia is a state of being over aware of health and eating far less than needed. This can lead to serious health problems and emotional stress at the slightest fear of gaining weight. Bulimia, on the other hand, also leads to health disorders and depression, caused by over eating.

Personality Disorder: Some people with personality disorders tend to behave peculiarly with others, to the extent that it becomes difficult to naturally accept them to be a part of a group. Such personality disorders are serious mental health issues.

Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a mental illness that seriously affects a person’s normal life. Schizophrenia is characterized by Hallucinations, Delusions, Thought Disorder, Depression and other grave mental conditions.

Post Traumatic Stress: Post Traumatic Stress Disorders or PTSD are effects of traumatic events. These are marked by muscle pains, constant and regular headaches, sudden fearful feelings, Alcohol addiction, Addiction to anti depressants or pills.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders: Also known as ADHD this is a serious neurological disorder and is identified by regular patterns of lack of attention and hyperactivity. It starts off in the childhood and shows symptoms like forgetfulness, distractedness, poor control on impulse and hyperactivity.

Other mental health issues that need consideration and attention are Manic Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety and Phobias, Dementia, Learning Disabilities and Insomnia
