Animal Health Questions

It is not for nothing that a dog is called man’s best friend. Animals often become man’s closest companions. They bring so much joy and happiness to our lives. Their love is unconditional and their loyalty knows no limit. And you too adore your pets, right? We know how upset you become to see your cuddly pets suffering from any health problem. So for all you animal lovers and pet owners, here is a comprehensive list of all the common and not-so-common health problems that affect your four-footed pals.

1. Can you suggest a safe flea shampoo for my cat?

To get rid of the itching wash your cat with a mild shampoo, maybe baby shampoo. The shampoo will kill the fleas. It is better that you do not use any flea shampoo. Flea shampoo has strong chemicals in it which can damage your cat’s fur.

2. My cat sheds a lot of hair which leaves me vacuuming the carpets all day long. What should I do?

This is a serious problem. Change your cat’s food. Give more vitamin supplements. Cut your cat’s excess hair. Keep the environment clean, airy and fresh.

3. Why is my cat losing weight all of a sudden?

Little weight loss is not to be worried about. But if weight loss is accompanied with lethargy and urine problem, then a trip to the vet would be best. Sudden weight loss may be due to Hepatic Lipidosis, commonly known as Fatty Liver Disease, which can be fatal if not treated in time.

4. My dog loves to eat chocolates. Is it safe to give her chocolates?

Chocolates are a big NO-No for dogs. Chocolate contains Theo bromine and caffeine which are poisonous to dogs. Just 8 ounces of baking chocolate can kill a 60 pound dog. So your dog better control her sweet tooth.

5. My dog has cataracts in both eyes. How can I make him follow commands?

It’s sad to know that your dog has lost his eyesight. But still you and your pal can have some great times together. Let your dog understand your commands by physical contact and smell sensation. For instance when you want him to lay down say down, softly touch his lower chest area. Be kind and show lots of love to your pet through touching and hugging. Your dog will come to rely on you and also learn your commands.

6. What should I do when my canary falls ill suddenly?

When birds become ill they usually stop eating. As a result they rapidly lose body heat. The energy reserves are depleted by illness. Whenever your canary is ill try to maintain the normal body temperature and blood sugar levels. That will keep your feathery friend alive till you take it to the vet.

7. How often should I take my pets to the vet?

Regular monthly visits to the vet clinic are a must to keep animals in good health. Get your pets vaccinated against rabies and bacteria attacks. Clip their nails on a regular basis. If you see your pet losing appetite or weight suddenly, take it to the vet immediately.

8. My pet rabbit has mites in its fur. What should I do to remove them?

Use Ivomec or a cat flea powder to remove the mites from your rabbit’s fur. Do not use products made for dogs on a rabbit. Keep your rabbit on a preventive parasite program, especially in the summer when they are most attacked by mites.

Keep your pets healthy and fit. They need all the care and love you can give them. If you have more Animal Health Questions, then log onto http://dmoz.org/Health/Animal/Pets/
