During adolescent growth spurts, teenagers require extra energy so they should be provided with extra food and nutrients. After infancy adolescence is the most crucial time for nutritious eating. Most of the teens are overfed, but undernourished. Teens are in the growing stage so they need to eat more food and the right kinds of food.
Teens frequently visit the fast-food outlets and consume the high-fat and nutrient-depleted food. Adolescent boys erroneously believe that more food builds more muscle which ultimately results into overeating and obesity. On the other hand a teenage girl believes that eating less result with being slim.
Menstruation increases a girl's monthly iron loss, and most of the time it is not recovered by an iron- rich diet. Teens have a preference for fat. Boys also exhibit their likings for protein-rich foods believing that meat builds muscle. Girls because of rising estrogen levels crave for sweets.
