The domestic dog's health is one of the thoroughly studied areas of veterinary medicine. The dog had been man’s companion since time immemorial and has a long and close intimate relationship with humans.
Some diseases and ailments of dogs are
Transferable diseases
- Rabies, or Hydrophobia, is a fatal disease which can be transmitted onto dogs or humans through the bite of an infected dog
- Parasites, particularly intestinal worms like hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms, can be transmitted in a dog's feces
- Fleas and ticks of various species may be brought home by a dog. These fleas and ticks multiply on the dog’s body and fatally infect most of the members of the owner’s family.
- Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease infected by contact with water, food, or soil containing urine of infected animals. Leptospirosis affects both humans and animals.
Genetic ailments of dogs
Genetic problems are common in dogs. Some of them are:
- Hip dysplasia is a defect in the hip joint which often causes arthritis in the hips at a later stage
- Luxating patellas can cause lameness and pain in the hind legs
- Genes for blindness or deafness causes the respective diseases
Parasites
- Intestinal worms
- Heartworm is a dog parasitoid and can be fatal
- Hydatidosis
- Mites cause skin problems like mange

- Chocolates
- Grapes and raisins
- Onions
- Garlic
- Macadamia nuts
