Blood Pressure

The pressure exerted by flowing blood on the walls of the arteries is called Blood Pressure. It is measured by an instrument called sphygmomanometer.

There are two types of Blood Pressure

  • Systolic Blood Pressure: The pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries when the heart contracts is termed Systolic Blood Pressure. Its range is within 120mm of mercury.
  • Diastolic Blood Pressure: The pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries when the heart dilates is called diastolic Blood Pressure. Its range is within 80 mm of mercury.

There are two kinds of Blood Pressure

  • High Blood Pressure: When the Blood Pressure is higher than the normal systolic range then a person is said to have High Blood Pressure. Symptoms include sweating and fatigue. High Blood Pressure increases the work load of the heart and causes unhealthy tissue growth. This may lead to strokes, heart attacks, chronic renal failure etc.
  • Low Blood Pressure: When the Blood Pressure is lower than the normal diastolic range then a person is said to have low Blood Pressure. It may be a sign of a severe impending disease. Symptoms include light headedness, dizziness, weakness and fainting.

It is extremely essential to monitor ones blood pressure regularly. In case of irregularities a doctor must consulted without fail.
