Established in 1909 as a humble research section of the Royal Marsden Hospital, the Institute has made remarkable progress in the domain of cancer research and is now one of the primary and autonomous Research institutes of the globe. The Institute is housed in Chelsea and in Sutton, Surrey.
Courses and Research at the Institute

Funding
As the Institute of Cancer Research receives an enormous amount of grants from external bodies and Trusts, it can offer Fellowships to its Ph.D scholars. The Welcome Trust offered £111,205 and the Kadoories Charitable Foundation offered £193,443 in the year 2005 to scholars in order to enable them to carry out studies in the field of cellular and molecular mechanisms and child cancer research.
Facilities
Some of the facilities that research scholars can avail of at the Institute are as follows:
- Microscopy Facility
- Electron Microscopy Facility
- IT and Bioinformatics Facility
- Peptide Synthesis Facility
The library of the Institute is also divided among the Institute’s 2 campuses at Chelsea and Sutton. Some of its unique facilities are that a student can renew and request for books via the library catalogue or the phone. He can obviously also renew or request for the book in person at the library. The library houses an enormous collection of medical journals in hard and soft copies.
150 full time research scholars and 80 postgraduate students are members of the Institute’s Students Union. The Students Union organizes meets for students. In 2006, they organized a Christmas dinner to enable students from the Chelsea and Sutton campuses to get together.
Accommodation facilities offered by the Institute can be availed of by the scholars depending on which postgraduate research course they are enrolled into. For example, those enrolled in the Radiation Protection Training Course can avail of the Bed and Breakfast accommodation in private lodges in close proximity at the rate of £40 per night.
