Established in 1947, the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) was originally set up as a national academic institution. It is affiliated to the University of London. It is a storehouse of research work performed in the legal field and its purpose is to circulate the results of extensive research work to interested people and organizations in the UK and overseas. IALS engages eight floors of Charles Clore House, a section of the Bedford Way.
Courses Offered
IALS being a member of the School of Advanced Study under in the University of London, can offer the following courses:
- MA Degree in Advanced Legislative Studies.
- MPhil / Ph.D Degree by Research
The purpose of the MA Degree in Advanced Legislative Studies is to satisfy the requirements of the students of UK and abroad for a structured course in Legislative Drafting.

- Company and Partnership Law
- Comparative Law
- European Union Law and Law Reform
- Financial Services Regulation
Scholarships
A restricted number of bursaries for the MPhil / Ph.D program applicants are available from the School of Advanced Study. Bursaries cover the tuition fees and living expenses.
Facilities
Besides providing access to its massive information resources, the following are some of library support services provided by IALS:
- Self Service Photocopying
- Computing facilities
- Services for users who are differently abled
- Electronic information training programs
IALS is constantly renovating its buildings. A café and coffee bar were the additions last year.
As IALS does not possess its own hostel facilities, students may avail of the residential facilities in the Halls of Residence of the University of London.
