Earlier a Chinese University in Singapore, Nanyang University began in 1956 and eventually combined with University of Singapore in 1980, forming The National University of Singapore. A new technical institute took over the University compounds and the Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) came into being from 1981. The institution was elevated to university rank as Singapore's second English-medium university, the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1991. With an individual technical identity, NTU has gradually built itself up on the rich culture of its parent university with time.
Born in 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) is a private organization specializing in management and business studies. In collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania - one of the best business schools in America, SMU with its diverse and challenging curriculum, intends to produce creative entrepreneurs and visionary business leaders.
SIM University (UniSIM) founded in 2006 is the single Singapore University devoted for the working adults. Here, professionals improve their individual abilities and acquire higher educational qualifications through large variety of quality programmes taught in the four different Schools of discipline:

University of New South Wales Asia or UNSW recently opened in Singapore in 2007, is meant for higher learning. Being Singapore's first foreign university it is first completely owned and operated research and teaching campus set up abroad by an Australian university. UNSW offers a comprehensive collection of Under-graduate and Post-graduate programs, as well as research studies in areas such as commerce, engineering, science, design, media and international studies.
