The School of Computing (SoC) at NUS, founded in 1988, strongly believes that a basic knowledge in computer operations is essential for entering the industrial world of IT sector. This line of thought forms their operating philosophy and acts as the driving force of SoC to programme its teaching and researches in a manner to produce competent computer professionals beneficial for the IT sector.
The faculty of SoC has a mixed population, which includes some 200 members from the top universities of the world. The student strength is above 2,200, a section of which comprises the Graduates.
The curriculum at SoC is classified into two divisions, namely:
- School of Computing
- Department of Information Systems
SoC provides six Under-graduate Degree Programmes that imparts knowledge on the basics in computer science, including four main specializations:
- Biology
- Business
- Computer Engineering
- Digital Media
The Graduate Degree programme offered here is by coursework or research emphasizing focus on the above areas of specialization.
The Department of Information System, on the other hand, is engaged mainly with researches in areas like:
- Culture and Information Systems
- Economics of Information Technology
- Electronic Commerce
- Electronic Government
- Group Support Systems
- Negotiation Support Systems
- Information Privacy
- User-Database Interaction
Funds from research grant forms the basis of the infrastructures necessary for the research projects at SoC. The framework is supported by numerous in-house research laboratories and centers equipped with enough apparatus.
An Executive Committee administers the operations of SoC in association with an Industry Advisory Committee.
Increasing technical efficiency in individuals is what SOC aspires at. This is what has brought universal recognition to the institution.
